Football or soccer is a game that has had many different versions for ages. In different countries, the game is played differently and perhaps the only same feature that they have is that they are played between two teams. Over time, football also goes by different names. Some of these names include soccer, rugby, American Football, and Australian Rule Football. However, one of the most popular ways of playing the sport is that of the International Federation of Association Football or better known as FIFA.
Because of the many variations that the sport has, it is very important for fans to be able to distinguish which type of sport that they would want to support. Thus, it is important to understand the basics of the game.
The Soccer Field
When you want to play soccer or football, the first thing that you will look for is the place for you to play in. That is the football field, or in other terms, the soccer field.
A soccer field comprises of the midfield line, center circle, penalty area, penalty mark, goal area, corner kick, and the goal. The overall dimension of a regular soccer field is 100 yards long and 60 yards wide.
The midfield line is the line that divides the field lengthwise. In the center, you can find the 10 yard center circle, which marks the center of the field and the area where defenders must stay outside at the start of the kickoff.
The penalty area is the rectangular box centered on the goal marks. When a foul is committed in this area, it could result in a penalty kick. The penalty mark is inside the penalty area and is 12 yards from the end of the line. This mark is where the penalty kicks are placed.
The goal area is a smaller rectangular box inside the penalty area and marks the area from which a goal kick must be placed. The corner kick is the one yard quarter circle marked on each corner of the field to know where a player must place the ball prior to delivering a corner kick. The goal is measured 24 feet wide by 8 feet in length.
The Rules of Soccer
A soccer team is comprises of eleven players in the field but they can make usually 3 substitutions at any point in the game. The game will last for two separate periods of time each of which will last for forty-five minutes. Half times, the time between each period usually lasts for 10 minutes and is usually a deciding factor in scoring.
Basically, each team just needs to defend half of the field to prevent the opposing team from scoring a goal. The goal is defended by a goalkeeper; he is tasked to keep the ball from going inside in order to keep the other teams from scoring. The game usually revolves around the field by passing the ball in various ways in attempt to breach or ruin the opposing team’s defense.
Understanding American Football
American Football is a game played between two teams as well and each team consisting of 11 players however it is a game of intense physical play with complex strategy to score points by advancing the ball to the opponent team’s end-zone.
The American football field is a little bit different than the soccer field. It is good to have basic knowledge of the field in order for you to play properly or understand how the game is played. Generally, an American football field has:
- A playing field that is 100 yards long.
- Lines or strips running across the field that are 5 yards away from one another.
- Shorter lines known as hash marks that mark each one yard interval.
- The end zone, which is on each end of the playing field marked with a red section with diagonal lines and extends ten yards.
- The total dimension of the field is 120 yards long and 160 feet wide.
- The goal line is the spot where the end zone meets the playing field.
- The yardage from the goal line is marked at a 10-yard interval, up to a 50-yard line in the center field. After reaching the 50-yard line, the yardage starts to descend in a 10-yard interval until they reach the opposite goal line.
Rules of the Game
Just like every other sport, American football has a lot of rules and regulations to follow.
Touchdowns are basically the ideal outcome of a drive – wherein the offensive team throws or runs the ball towards the end zone and gets 6 points. At the same time, they kick for an extra point or choose for a 2-point conversion. Each team can also try scoring by kicking field goals, which are worth 3 points. The team’s field-goal must kick the ball between the upright posts in order to be able to score. The teams can also score a safety that is worth 2 points by tackling the opponent who possesses the ball into his own end zone.
Teams and Players
Each football team is composed of an offense, defense and special teams. The special teams are used in kicking plays; they are used to prevent the other team from attempting a field goal.
There are many positions on a team and one of the most important players is the quarterback. As the leader of the team, the quarterback starts the play after receiving the ball from the center usually by passing, running, or handing off the ball.
Just like any other sport, football or soccer can be played by females and males, although males are a little bit more popular. If you are a fan, understanding the basics of the game is important for you so that you will be able to follow the game as it progresses and you won’t constantly disturb others who are earnestly watching the game by asking questions.
If you are a player, the more important it is for you to understand the basic concepts of the game so that you will be able to follow what your coach wants you to do, or the strategies that your team needs to undertake. These type of sports are not a one-man sports, that is why it best to cooperate and work together as a team.
